In concrete members, shear friction is considered for any interface between two concretes cast at different times, between dissimilar materials, as well as for any existing or potential crack. For composite concrete flexural members, a shear interface is created when fresh concrete is placed against hardened concrete. Design for both shear friction and horizontal shear requires careful consideration for the transfer of forces across the interface. This webinar discusses relevant provisions for the design of these interfaces in concrete structures. The discussion also includes an overview of changes from ACI 318-19 to ACI 318-25 along with requirements in the new ACI 319-25 for precast concrete structures.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Jared Brewe is Vice President of S.K. Ghosh Associates, where he is a technical consultant on structural codes and standards to agencies involved in the design and construction of buildings and infrastructure. He joined SKGA following his position as Vice President of Technical Activities at the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Prior to PCI, Dr. Brewe was a consulting engineer with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger and CTLGroup, where he focused on forensic investigations and structural evaluation and rehabilitation. He is a member of numerous committees of the American Concrete Institute, ASTM International, American Welding Society, Building Seismic Safety Council, Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, and the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Dr. Brewe earned his BS, MS, and PhD in Civil Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, MO. He is a licensed professional engineer in several states and a licensed structural engineer in Illinois.
