2012 International Building Code Handbook

Douglas W. Thornburg, A.I.A., C.B.O., is the Vice-President and Technical Director of Product Development and Education for the International Code Council (ICC) where he provides leadership in the technical development and positioning of support products for ICC. In addition, Doug develops and reviews technical products, reference books and resource materials relating to the International Codes and their supporting documents. Prior to employment with ICC in 2004, he spent nine years as a code consultant and educator on building codes.

Formerly Vice-President/Education for the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), Doug continues to develop and present building code seminars nationally and has developed numerous educational texts and resource materials. He was presented with ICC’s inaugural Educator of the Year Award in 2008, recognizing his outstanding contributions in education and training. In addition, he was the recipient of ICBO’s prestigious A.J. (Jack) Lund Award in 1996.

A graduate of Kansas State University and a registered architect, Doug has over 32 years of experience in building code training and administration, including ten years with ICBO, and five years with the City of Wichita, Kansas. He is certified as a building official, building inspector and plans examiner, as well as in seven other code enforcement categories. Doug has authored a number of publications, including the IBC Handbook – Fire and Life Safety Provisions and the Significant Changes to the International Building Code.

John is a Principal Staff Engineer in the Business and Product Development Department of ICC. During his 16 year-tenure with ICC, he has worked for the code development department, technical services, government relations, training and education, and product development. He is now responsible for the research and development of technical resources related to the structural engineering provisions of the UBC, IBC and IRC. He serves as project manager and technical reviewer for the structural and seismic publications published and co-branded by ICC. John also develops and presents technical seminars internationally on the structural provisions of the I-Codes. He has written several technical articles on the structural and seismic provisions of the IBC that have appeared in both Structural Engineer & Design and Structure magazines. John is co-author of Significant Changes to the 2006 International Building Code, Significant Changes to the 2009 International Building Code and Significant Changes to the 2012 International Building Code published by Delmar Cengage Learning. He is co-author with S.K. Ghosh, PhD, of the 2006 IBC Handbook — Structural Provisions, 2009 IBC Handbook—Structural Provisions and 1997 UBC—2006 IBC Structural Comparison & Cross Reference. John wrote the structural chapters in the 2006 IBC Plan Review Manual and contributed to the 2009 IBC Q&A – Structural Provisions and the structural portion of the 2012 IBC Commentary. He graduated with honors from California State University in Sacramento with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He is a Registered Civil Engineer in the State of California, a member of the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and an ICC Certified Plans Examiner.
