Strut and tie modeling provides an excellent holistic tool for the straight forward solution of any structural concrete design problem. Traditional sectional design is thoroughly covered in a structural engineering curriculum; unfortunately, typically strut and tie modeling is only briefly touched on at the university level. This web seminar will demystify the underlying principles behind the design and detailing of reinforced concrete elements utilizing ACI 318-19’s strut and tie modeling procedures.

SPEAKER:
Lawrence Novak is the Senior Director of Structural Engineering & Codes for the Portland Cement Association. Prior to joining PCA, he was an Associate Partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill where he had the opportunity to be involved with the engineering for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. He serves on several technical committees, including the ACI 318 Code committee, the ACI committee on Sustainability of Concrete and the ASCE 7 committee on Building Loads. He has served as Director on the governing board for organizations including SEAOI, TCA and the Illinois Engineering Hall of Fame. Novak was selected as the 2010 “Centennial Lecturer” in engineering and he was named the “Citizen Engineer of the Year” by the Illinois Chapter of ASCE. In 2011 he was named the “ACI Educational Speaker of the Year” and in 2017 he was presented with the “ACI Education Award” for his “unique ability to convey concrete knowledge and inspire others to greater heights”.
